- >Established in 1979 under the guidance of Mr. Hiralal Karmakar, Bankura Traditional Art Center began its journey in manufacturing exquisite handcrafted home décor products.
- The journey began in Mr. Hiralal Karmakar’s childhood, when he started painting, clay art, and stone carving with the loving support of his grandfather, the late Mr. Shanti Ram Karmakar.
- For better experience, Mr. Hiralal Karmakar went to Susunia to learn stone carving, and later to Kolkata to develop his skills in wood carving between the ages of 13 and 15.
- At the age of 16–17, Mr. Hiralal Karmakar made a stone sculpture called ‘Daksha Yagna’, based on a story from Hindu mythology. This artwork brought him his first State Award from West Bengal in 1979.
- Mr. Hiralal Karmakar founded the Bankura Traditional Art Center as a cottage art institute to share his skills & knowledge with the people of his village.
- Over two decades of dedicated work,Mr. Hiralal Karmakar trained over 150 artisans in traditional handicrafts. His remarkable contributions earned him numerous State Awards, and at the age of 38, he received the prestigious National Award.
- For the last 40 years, Bankura Traditional Art Center has been producing thousands of unique and beautiful home décor designs that are distributed throughout India. With its continued success, many skilled artisans have joined the institute to contribute to its growing legacy.
